Today I’m going to “celebrate” my first year in Melbourne.
I’m trying to think about what has happened in the last 365 days, if my life has changed, how has it changed.
I guess it’s easier to make a simple list, or better two. A smiley face for the things I love, I sad face for the things I find difficult to deal with.
Landscape: I love the countryside, the beaches, the rain forest, the mountains, the green hills. It’s absolutely stunning!
City life: Melbourne offers so many different events that it’s been hard for me to follow them all. I love the fact that there’s always something to get the kids entertained too.
History: I learnt about Australian history by visiting museums, reading a few novels, visiting places. I love learning new little things everyday and I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have learnt so many things about Australia if I hadn’t moved here.
Time zone: I’m finding it more and more difficult to deal with the huge gap between Australian and European time zone (8 hours gap at the moment). I hate not being able to chat with family and friends whenever I like.
Making friends: I find it particularly difficult finding Australian friends. I thought about the reasons and my conclusion is that they already have their families and friends and don’t feel the “need” to have a new one. Friendship is hard work and some people don’t want to put any effort in it if they know you are going to move away in a couple of years.
Suburbs: when I arrived I was pretty shocked by what I saw. I felt like I was in the movie “back to the future”, I have travelled from Europe to Australia, from the 21st century to the 20th century, more precisely the eighties.
The shops, roads, buildings and people looked like stuck in the ’80. I was really disappointed, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Melbourne suburbs are so different from the city centre. After one year I’m used to it, but I still find it a bit upsetting and I love catching the train to the city centre.
Will these lists change in the next 365 days?
Probably they’ll be different, I will be different.
